2012 is off to a great start. Our ski/snowboard program begin last Friday with 60 winter enthusiasts hitting the slopes of Crystal Mt. We still have room on the bus and ski packages are still available.

Tonight, the MRA Annual Meeting will be held at 6:30 PM and the recipients of the Charles E. Schoedel Outstanding Service Award will be announced!

Wednesday evening Deep Water Aerobics starts back up at the Paine Aquatic Center from 7:00 to 7:45 PM.

Registration is ongoing for the Manistee Soccer Club spring season. Forms are available online at www.manisteemra.org and should be submitted by February 10th.

Swim lessons for tots and kids will resume in February - registrations now being accepted.

And in early March we will offer our Soft Soccer Clinic for 2 weekends. Plus a referee clinic for students interested in reffing MRA soccer.

There is lots to do - don't delay - sign up today!

The MRA staff and board of director's wish you a very Merry Christmas! We hope you enjoy family and friends throughout the holiday season.

We're looking forward to a bit of snow as our Ski Nights begin Friday, January 6th at Crystal Mt. There is still room on the bus and ski packages available. Stop in to see us after Jan. 2nd.

The Men's Basketball League will start up on Sunday, January 8th with games being held at Portage Lake Bible Camp gymnasium.

Our Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, January 9th, 6:30 PM at our office located in the Briny Building.

Deep Water Aerobics will resume Wednesday, January 11th, 7:00 to 7:45 PM at the Paine Aquatic Center.

Our office will be closed December 22nd through January 2nd.

The Manistee Recreation Association and Portage Lake Bible Camp are sponsoring a Family Swim Night at the Paine Aquatic Center this coming Tuesday, November 22 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Each person wishing to participate should bring a canned good or a non-perishable food item. All items will be donated to a local food pantry.

Before you get stuck in the kitchen or on the couch for the weekend, bring the kids and have some good old family fun! Giving and Swimming - what a great way to start the Thanksgiving season.

Winter Fun

Whether you enjoy being indoor or outdoor, the MRA has a winter activity for you.

For the outdoor winter enthusiast we begin our ski/snowboard program January 6. The "best rate" deadline however is December 1st, so sign up soon. Learn to ski or hone your current skills! Registration packets available at the MRA office.

If you would rather stay warm, work up a sweat and hang with the guys, then indoor Men's Basketball may be just the thing for you. Form a team and sign up by December 9th to be considered for the bracket. Games begin in early January.

Plan early so as not to miss a deadline! Gift certificates are also available and make great gifts.

I know you don't want to hear the word snow....but it will fly, sooner or later. And it's time to prepare yourself for winter fun. The MRA will again be traveling to Crystal Mt. on Friday evenings to enjoy the slopes. Package prices will be available for equipment rental, weekly lessons and lift access. Best rates are available prior to December 1st. Whether you ski or snowboard, are a beginner or an expert....you're guaranteed fun throughout the winter with this program.

Sign up soon for MRA Swim lessons. Lessons are available for infants 6 months of age right up through adults. We have something for everyone. Whether you're just learning to swim or choosing to fine tune your strokes, we'll design a swim program for you. Lessons for children 4 and under begin this Saturday at the Paine Aquatic Center. Register at the MRA office by 1:00 on Friday to be involved in this age group. All other lessons begin October 17th. Pre-registration required.

There's no need to tuck that swim suit away. The Paine Aquatic Center is there for your pleasure. Swim lessons for all ages will be offered by the MRA beginning in October.

Our Tot classes for little kids, age 6 month through age 4 begin October 8th. Lessons for kids age 5 and up, including adults, will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning October 17th. Pre-register at the MRA office located in the Briny Building.

MRA Soccer

We are still in need of a couple of soccer coaches, one for 1/2 grade and one or two for 3/4/5 grades. Call the MRA office if you are interested. Kindergarten and 3/4/5 teams are pretty much maxed out but we still have room for 1/2 graders to fill the rosters. Let us know by the end of this week if you have an interest in playing or coaching soccer.

Hunter Safety

The Muzzle Loaders of Manistee will be offering a second session of Hunter Safety/Rifle & Bow. The dates of the course are August 29, 30, 31 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM and September 1 from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. Pre-register at the MRA office. Hunters 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Kiwanis Tennis Academy will be held Monday, August 1 through Friday, August 5th beginning at 9:00 AM. The camp is for tennis enthusiasts Kindergarten through 8th grade. The camp is free but we would like you to call the office to register.

5K Run/Walk - HAM Week

Healthy Active Manistee week kicks off with a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, May 14 at 9:00 AM from Manistee High School. The morning begins with Jazzercise at 8:45 to loosen your muscles and warm you up. Pre-registration will be accepted at the MRA office between now and race day. Packet pick up will be Thursday, May 12 and Friday, May 13 at the MRA office between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Morning of the race registration is also an option for those fair weather runners! Grab a friend and start your spring with a fun morning of fitness.

Tee Ball and Machine Pitch

The MRA is registering for summer baseball programs. Tee Ball for Tots will take place on Tuesday and Thursdays and is open to kids going into Kindergarten. Kids going into 1st and 2nd grade will play tee ball on Monday and Wednesday evenings. And machine pitch is offered to 3rd through 5th grade students and is played on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Pre-school Programs Coming Soon

Three programs will begin in early 2011 for pre-school aged children.
The MRA will be offering Pee Wee Play on Saturdays beginning January 8th and running for 4 weeks. The class will offer kids the opportunity to explore movement through manipulative play, balance and coordination activities and sports readiness skills.
Musikids will begin on Monday, January 17th and run for 6 weeks. This course introduces children to instrumental and lyrical music. Pre-schoolers experience playing several different instruments and moving and singing to their favorite songs.
February 5th begins our first session of Tot Swim meeting 4 weeks on Saturday mornings.

Class size is limited in all of these programs so we encourage early registration.

Men's Basketball League

On October 19th the MRA will kick off a new program at the Paine Aquatic Center beginning at 7:00 PM. If you're looking for a great cardio workout, we'll ramp it up as we tone and strengthen our muscles during DEEP WATER AEROBICS. Pre registration and purchase of a water belt required.

Sand Castle/Sculpture Contest

Our second session of Tot Swim begins this Saturday at the Paine Aquatic Center. Swim lessons for kids age 5 and up begin July 19th. A swim assessment is scheduled for Monday, July 12 at 6:30 PM for first timers.

Tennis Camp for middle school girls begins July 13th at 1st Street Beach courts. The Kiwanis Kids Tennis Camp deadline is July 19 - camp session is the first week in August.

Hunter Safety has plenty of room in both sessions.

Tennis for Girls

Baseball players entering 5th Grade

The deadline to sign up for spring soccer is fast approaching! Stop by the MRA to register before March 30th. Teams for Kindergarten through 4th grade students will be put together by April 2nd. Coaches are meeting on April 6th and games will begin on April 17th if this nice weather holds out!

This Thursday is our last bus trip to Crystal Mt. Hope you join us for a great night of skiing and snowboarding!

Friday is the deadline to sign up for wrestling and Manistee Soccer Club. Our office closes at 1:00 PM on Fridays.

Saturday, there will be a winter carnival for elementary kids in the high school commons, followed by open swim at the pool from 3:00 to 4:00 PM - Cost $5.00 per family, $2.00 per individual.

The Manistee Recreation Association will be hosting a Family Swim time this Friday, February 5th from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the Paine Aquatic Center. Cost is $10.00 for the entire family.

On Saturday, February 6th join us at the skating rink located at Sands Park for an afternoon of skating, building snowmen and sipping hot cocoa. There is no cost for the day's activities. The Teen Center has over 300 pair of skates you may pick from at no charge!

Join the MRA in a stroll through downtown Manistee on a wintry evening. Thursday, December 17 meet at the Briny, Suite D at 5:15PM.
Following the walk we will enjoy holiday goodies and something warm

All contributions will be donated to the Salvation Army food pantry. We will be visiting neighborhoods this evening between 5:30 and 6:30 PM. It's not too soon to register for the MRA Ski/Snowboard Night at Crystal Mountain. Trips begin in January every Thursday evening, leaving right after school and returning by 9:00 PM back to Manistee. Rates for lift, instruction, rental and transportation are reasonable. Call the MRA office for details. This is a great way to enjoy a winter night, cruising down the slopes with friends and sipping hot cocoa to warm up and then back out on the hills. Deadline for signing up is November 27th!

Keep next Friday evening (November 13) open for FAMILY SWIM NIGHT at the Paine Aquatic Center. The entire family can come and enjoy an evening of fun for only $10.00. Payment will be collected at the door beginning at 6:45 PM. Swim runs from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.

MRA Ski/Snowboard Night

The Manistee Recreation Association participates in Crystal Mountain's ski school program offering an evening of skiing during the week for a discounted rate. Contact our office to inquire about rental rates, lift ticket fees and transportation passes. We will need 30 people signed up to ride the bus in order to provide weekly transportation by Dial-A-Ride. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the winter weather, stay active and learn to ski or snowboard. Lessons are included with the lift ticket rates. Deadline for this program in November 27th. Sign up soon. Call the MRA for details. Our first day on the slopes is Thursday, January 7th.

Nature Walk

Join the Manistee Recreation Association for it's 3rd walk in a yearly series as we wander through the trails of the forest. Our walkers will meet at 5:30 PM on Thursday, October 22nd in the parking area across from the entrance to Orchard Beach State Park. All participants will receive an MRA Walking Program t-shirt. We'll explore the forest floor and enjoy the last of the fall colors, hopeful to spot some friendly critters as we make our way leisurely along the trails.

We'll continue our walking program next month, November 19th and then again December 17th - those months we'll bundle up and have new things to explore.
